How death influenced Walt Disney, his work, and the Disney Parks

I have always had an interest in Disney in every form, be that that films, the parks and Walt Disney himself. I have also had an interest in the death industry and how we, as humans, react to death. Due to my fascination in both these topics, I thought it would be interesting to research into how death has affected Disney the Company and Walt Disney. Throughout his lifetime, Walt Disney was obsessed with the theme of death and this became obvious in not only his work but also within the Disney parks. Disney was born in Chicago, 1901, and his obsession with death became prevalent when he was only seven years old. One night, Disney saw an owl perched on a low-hanging branch, Disney grabbed the owl and flung it to the ground, in his excitement he stomped on the bird and killed it; that was Disney’s first encounter with death. I don’t know anyone that would kill an animal out of excitement but – you do you, Walt! When Disney started work in the animation industry, he was a part of I-Works ...

Books I Read During Lockdown

Image
Hi guys! Since the beginning of lockdown in 2020, I have been spending my free time reading a lot more, as well as watching some adaptations of some novels and series. Books: The Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire. I have read all but one of the books in the Wayward Children series, excluding the most recent release. This series is a YA fantasy series that is based around children who have visited another world, such as Wonderland or Narnia. Each book focuses on a different protagonist and their personal experiences in their other world. Each book is around 200 pages long and is a completed self-contained story, yet I would still highly recommend reading these novellas in order of publication as there are a few recurring characters. Some of the themes that are featured in this series are letting children be children yet still understanding that they themselves understand far more 'adult' concepts than many believe. Another is about not forcing children to fit the mold yo...

Future Classics Book Tag

Hi guys, I saw this video by Eric Karl Anderson on YouTube called the 'Future Classics Book Tag' and I thought that it seemed like such a fun and interesting concept that I wanted to do it myself. *The original video is on Eric's YouTube channel Here are the the tag questions and my answers: Q1: Pick an Established Classic A: The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton Q2: Pick a Book That's Gone Under the Radar A: The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides This book hasn't really gone under the radar, however, I feel that people read the title and synopsis and don't pick it up because it sounds too depressing. This book, even though it discusses depressing but serious subjects, it writing so beautifully that it is almost impossible to put it down. Q3: Pick an Award Winning Book A: A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James Q4: Pick a Highly Praised Book on Your TBR A:The Secret History by Donna Tartt Q5: Pick a Favourite Book for Your Grandchildren ...

Killer Kid (Short Story)

Julian hadn’t been swimming for what felt like a million years, but today was a special day in the fact that it is Toby’s birthday. Toby is Julian’s best friends and they do everything together, so it was to no-one's surprise that he had invited Julian to spend time with him on his birthday. After changing into their matching swim shorts, the boys sprinted to the water's edge, counted to three and cannonballed in together. The pool was deeper than Julian had remembered, so deep that he could touch the bottom even if he jumped as hard as he could. They both stood on the end preparing for their diving contest when Toby spotted a blonde girl staring at them, it was Sophie, Julian’s younger sister. “Can I join?” Sophie asked in her high pitched whine. Toby shrugged, “I guess, do you mind Julian?” he questioned glancing up at his friend, Julian shrugged in response. Sophie stood and watched as the boys both dived into the cool water, their splashes making her hair stick to h...

Murder Monster (Short Story)

It was an ordinary dull Tuesday morning, just as dull as the day previous. Maria strolled down the water-stricken pavement to the rustling gates at the entrance of Fiona Wood Primary School. Her footsteps where the only sound, no screams exploding from fresh lungs or the patter of tiny feet, just her footsteps and... another pair of footsteps; these much lighter than her own. Heartbeat racing too fast to count, Maria slowly edges her skull clockwise, eyes focusing on the now occupied doorway. Frank Pertons in Year One, Marias once tense body relaxed at the sight of him. She tiptoed towards him. "What are you doing here so early Frank, where are your parents?" she questioned, smiling brightly at the child in front of her. Frank smiled at her devilishly, "Mummy and Daddy are at home, Miss Johnson" he spoke happily, whilst his eyes sparkled. Maria frowned, Frank was never happy, never smiling, so what changed in the last twenty-four hours. "How did you get he...

Nature vs Humanity (Poem)

I watch nature through the protection of the double-pane window, Its beauty too precious to be touched by mankind. I lock myself away, not only to protect such beauty, but also myself. I feel the segregation placed upon me. Our world is not beautiful. It has been tainted with electronics, Our eyes glued to their glowing screens. Our lives viewed through its HD camera. This window isn't here by accident, it holds a purpose. It keeps the natural beauty out of humanities harsh hands. It was not only placed for keeping such beauty out, but for keeping these violent beings in their artificial environment. What happened to our lives?

Weakness (Poem)

Pain dripping from my fingertips, coating the floor. Pain. Fear. Tears. All of which convey weakness, or so I'm told. My brain filling. Becoming numb. Vision beginning to fog, then nothing. I feel nothing. Tears are for the weak, fear doesn't exist. Only the numbness can save you now.
